New Scifi and Fantasy Releases: Week of October 24

Posted by Simcha 10:27 PM, under | 4 comments

I have been so swamped at work lately that I wasn't sure I'd have time to get a list out to you this week but, although it's a bit late, here it is.

Now I hope you have some patience with me over the next couple of weeks as I may be posting less frequently than usual as I try to get myself back on schedule after the recent holidays. I have read a bunch of great books which I can't wait to tell you about and I have a really interesting interview coming up as well with Gili Bar-Hillel, who talks about her job as a book translator. So stayed tuned!

Hope you have a great reading week.

Science Fiction

1Q84
Haruki Murakami

Publisher:Knopf
Release Date: October 25

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Nothing jumps out at me this week - which is just as well since I need to stop acquiring books. (At least until the end of the year)

Nothing screams at me to read it, but I will read The Eternal Night since I've already done so with the first two books.

SO EXCITED TO READ 1Q84!!!!
I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for it to come out in English, and now that it finally has, it seems that my Japanese is at a level when I finally might be able to read it in Japanese. Maybe I'll give it an English/Japanese mutual go. :-)
