New Scifi & Fantasy Releases: Week of February 27

Posted by Simcha 4:15 PM, under | 9 comments

Yesterday was my birthday and I'm now trying to come to grips with the fact that my 20's really are behind me, and that I am firmly entrenched in the 30's. So far 31 hasn't been that much fun but I'll wait to see how it plays out.

On the plus side, I treated myself to a few birthday books from The Book Depository, one of which includes Patricia Brigg's new release,
River Marked. I was also tempted to get Patrick Rothfuss's The Wise Man's Fear, which is one of the books that I have been anticipating the most, but I'm gong to have to wait until the price goes down on that one. Though next week Jasper Fforde's newest Thursday Next book will be released, so it's going to be a tie as to which one I'll be splurging on.
Decisions...decisions...

And in addition to my books, I also received this wonderful rendition of "Happy Birthday" from my adorable niece:

(I'm pretty sure she does know my name but got confused because her own name is Sima. Or maybe not. Whatever, I'll take what I can get)

In the meantime I'm actually on a bit of a non-genre kick, and I'm very much enjoying Juliet, by Anne Fortier and The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels by Ree Drummond.

Hope you all have a great reading week!

Cayleb and Sharleyan have created the Charisian Empire, the greatest naval power in the history of Safehold, and they’ve turned Charis into a place of refuge for all who treasure freedom.

Their success may prove short-lived. The Church of God Awaiting, which controls most of Safehold, has decreed their destruction. Mother Church’s entire purpose is to prevent the very things to which Charis is committed. Since the first attempt to crush the heretics failed, the Church has no choice but to adopt some of the hated Charisian innovations for themselves. Soon a mighty fleet will sail against Cayleb, destroying everything in its path.

But there are still matters about which the Church knows nothing, including Cayleb and Sharleyan’s adviser, friend, and guardian— the mystic warrior-monk named Merlin Athrawes. Merlin knows all about battles against impossible odds, because he is in fact the cybernetic avatar of a young woman named Nimue Alban, who died a thousand years before. As Nimue, Merlin saw the entire Terran Federation go down in fire and slaughter at the hands of a foe it could not defeat. He knows that Safehold is the last human planet in existence, and that the stasis the Church was created to enforce will be the human race’s death sentence if it is allowed to stand.

An ancient rift between the demonic dimension and our own--sealed during the destruction of Atlantis--begins to open, threatening to loose all the demons of hell on humanity (including the one personally bent on destroying Celia). Celia’s hellish recent experiences have given her the unique combination of abilities needed to close the rift. Nerds : How Dorks, Dweebs, Techies, and Trekkies Can Save Americaand Why They Might Be Our Last Hope
David Anderegg
Genre: Non-Fiction
Publisher: Tarcher
Release Date: March 3

Thick glasses, socially awkward, a math whiz with a pocket protector- everyone knows what a nerd is. But where did this stereotype come from? Children aren't born knowing what a "nerd" or "geek" is, so why do they know by the age of five or six that they don't want to be one? In this revised and updated paperback edition of his thought-provoking book, family psychotherapist and psychology professor David Anderegg reveals how the systematic disparagement of "nerds" in our culture is bad for our children and even worse for America. In Nerds, Anderegg examines why science and engineering have become socially poisonous disciplines, why adults wink at the derision of "nerdy" kids, and what the cost of this rising tide of anti- intellectualism is to both our children and our nation. Drawing upon education research, psychological theory, and his own interviews with nerdy and non-nerdy kids alike, Anderegg argues that in order to prepare rising generations to compete in the global marketplace, we need to revisit how we think about "nerds."

The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day Two)
Patrick Rothfuss
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: DAW
Release Date: March 1

"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."

My name is Kvothe.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

So begins the tale of a hero told from his own point of view-a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man's Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's road.

All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. Along the way, Kvothe is put on trial by the legendary Adem mercenaries, is forced to reclaim the honor of the Edema Ruh, and travels into the Fae realm. There he meets Felurian, the faerie woman no man can resist, and who no man has ever survived...until Kvothe.

In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Yay! Demonglass! Can I just say that I love the Hex Hall covers? I can? Well, I love the Hex Hall covers!

My sis said she really enjoyed the weekend, by the way!

Riv Re: I haven't read the Rex Hall series yet but I've been meaning to give them a try.
And we very much enjoyed having your sister and her friends over as well. My kids, in particular, had a fantastic time with them.

I'm looking forward to only two of those books really. River Marked and Late Eclipses. Both are part of really great series.

I have to reread the first book from Rothfuss because I don't remember it. I bought it right after it came out and don't remember anything about it. It was before I visited blogs so I have no idea about the hype around it then but I'll pick up the new one after it comes out in paperback.

Happy Birthday!!!!

And your niece is adorable. :) Wonderful Birthday gift to get. :)

Oh, and I'm waiting for The Wise Man's Fear as well. I really am looking forward to when I can get and dig in. :)

Hoep you had a great weekend for your Birthday, and 30's are not all that great. I've been here for 5 going on 6 years. And don't want to be. :)

WonderBunny: You know, the October Daye series just didn't work for me for some reason, though everyone else seems to love it. I'm also going to have to reread the first Rothfuss book because I can't remember what it's about at all, even though I remember loving it. Though it will be tough to squeeze it in since it's a rather hefty book. But I'm sure it's worth it.

Melissa: Thank you! That's a shame about the thirties though, and the forties don't sound that great either. The fifties, on the other hand, have some definite potential, so that's something to look forward to.

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Simcha...Happy Birthday to you!

The Richard Matheson book looks fantastic.

Happy Birthday :D

Ohhh River Marked *drools a bit*

Happy Belated Birthday, Simcha!!! And your niece's version of the birthday song is precious!

Ryan: Thanks, that was lovely ;)

Blodeudd: Hey, stop drooling on my book!

Stephanie: Thanks ;)
